Kelheim is a historic town, first documented in 866. The town was founded at the confluence of Danube and Altmühl rivers which have been converted into the Rhine-Main-Danube-Canal for marine transport. Nestled in Danube-valley, Kelheim is in the heart of a beautiful forest lime plateau and meandering Danube river. The Hall of Liberation, its major landmark was built by King Ludwig I in 1863 on top of Mount Michael and is visible from all over the town and valley. The beautiful Danube-Gorge is located between Kelheim and the famous Weltenburg Monastery and has been protected as natural monument since 1840.
